Zbigniew "Ziggy" Dzimiera

Rotterdam - On Wednesday, December 9, 2020, Zbigniew Dzimiera, (known to some as “Ziggy”) loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and great friend passed away peacefully at Eddy Village Green in Cohoes Nursing Facility after a long illness with Alzheimer’s at age 84, surrounded by many that loved and cared for him. Zbigniew was born on June 21, 1936 in Podhajce, Poland to Marcel and Franciszka (Szpytma) Dziemiera. He and his family were survivors of the mass deportation of Poles to Siberia between Feb 1940 - Mar 1946 and endured many hardships of WWII. He lived part of his young life during post WWII with his mother and sister in a small beautiful and picturesque Silesian Mountain village named Stronie ÅšlÄ…skie, Poland. On December 25, 1959, he married Wanda KwiecieÅ„ Dzimiera. He has 3 children; his son, Dariusz, and two daughters, Marzenna and Irena. He emigrated from Poland to the USA in 1974 to reunite with his WWII displaced father and his own family had followed in 1977 and settled in Schenectady, NY. He worked and retired from the General Electric Co. in Schenectady in 2001 and was a cancer survivor post his retirement. Zbigniew had immense pride not only for his Polish heritage but his American citizenship and was very grateful of his own accomplishments and what he was able to provide for his family. He was known to his grandchildren as “Dziadzi” and cherished the time he spent with them. He was an avid musician, enjoyed listening to music, dancing, singing, playing percussion instruments and loved to get in on a set of drums during polka bands performances, if the opportunity arose. He liked being around people, loved to share his life experiences and was admired not only by friends and family, but also by everyone that had a chance to know him. He was a member of Polish Siberian Union Society and Polish National Alliance, Polish American Veterans. In addition, he was a devoted catholic, an active member of St. Adalbert's Church in Schenectady, serving as an Usher with his peers. He was known for his kind heart, infectious smile, compassionate spirit and great sense of humor. Zbigniew was preceded in death by his father, Marcel, his mother Franciszka, baby sister Helenka (died in Siberia), and step-brother William Dziemiera. He is survived by his caring and loving wife Wanda Dzimiera of Rotterdam, his three children, Irena (StanisÅ‚aw) RomaÅ„czuk, Marzenna (Robert S) Rafalik, Dariusz Dzimiera (Kathleen & Sean Baker), his sister Danuta Biber, grandchildren Christine (Christopher) Borst-Dzimiera, Elizabeth Dzimiera, Robert D Rafalik (Megan Boettner), RafaÅ‚ (Joanna) RomaÅ„czuk, Tomasz (Justyna) RomaÅ„czuk, great-grandchildren Amelia Rafalik, Dominik and Wiktor RomaÅ„czuk, Aleksandra and Adrianna RomaÅ„czuk and extended family members. Mr. Zbigniew Dzimiera’s family would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to all his caregivers and staff members at Eddy Village Green of Cohoes that loved and cared for him daily during his illness and final passing as if he was their own family member. You will always be in our hearts and your compassion will never be forgotten. Due to the current health situation, the service will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
