Walter S. "Bucky" Hurd, Jr.

d. September 9, 2023

Walter “Bucky” S. Hurd Jr., 79, a Schenectady native and resident died suddenly at home on Saturday September 9, 2023. Bucky was born in Schenectady, NY on July 28, 1944, to the late Walter “Bucky” S. Hurd Sr. and Jennie L. Hurd (nee) Ferri. He grew up in Bellevue and graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1964. Bucky was a member of the Mont Pleasant football team, a member of the Track and Field where he was an expert shot putter and discus thrower, a member of the Golden Gloves and the Mont Pleasant basketball team. It was at Mont Pleasant High School where he met his high school sweetheart Margaret, and in 1966 she became his loving wife.

Bucky’s love of the outdoors, his love of fishing and bow hunting made him a strong believer in responsible and sustainable wildlife conservation, which he passed along to his sons. He was a member of the Guan Ho Ha Fish and Game Club of Glenville where he managed the Archery League and was certified by NYS as an Archery Instructor and taught for many years. He became an avid golfer and could be found playing at the Briar Creek Golf course. Bucky was a diehard NY Yankees fan and supported them in the good years and turned the TV off during the bad games, lol.

Bucky’s career began as a Schenectady Gazette paperboy for six years beginning when he was at Van Corlaer Junior High School through his senior year at Mont Pleasant and managed one of their largest paper routes with over 125 daily customers to which he delivered to every day. After his graduation from Mont Pleasant, he worked as an auto mechanic at Al Mangin’s Jeep Dealership and due to his intense work ethic Bucky retired from the Schenectady MP Lab as Director of Operations.

Most of all, Bucky was a loving family man, had a generous heart and a ready smile and was always available to help his family and friends with anything he could do. Bucky was a master at telling jokes and always enjoyed playing practical jokes on his family and friends.  Bucky will be deeply missed.

Bucky is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Margaret Hurd (nee) Johnson his sons Andrew Hurd (Joslyn) of Schenectady, and Thomas Hurd (Traci) of Beulah MI; grandchildren, Mari-Anne (Cody) Quill, Thomas “TJ” Hurd, and Morgan-Zoe Hurd; his sisters Jacqueline Hurd and Katheryn Sparre (nee) Hurd brother Gregory Hurd and brother-in-law Larry Stanley, sister in-law and brother-in-law Judy and Dick DeSantis; his nieces Kimberly, Gena and Christine. And many great nephews and great nieces. In addition to his parents Bucky was predeceased by Ruth Donohue, also a member of the family.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Schenectady Fire Department and to the staff of Mohawk Ambulance for the urgent care they gave Bucky, it is very much appreciated.
