Rotterdam- Vincent T. Fernandez, 92, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday November 1, 2020 with his loving family by his side. Born in Schenectady, NY he was the son of the late Joseph Fernandez and Caroline Nastars. He was married to Theresa Gazzillo Fernandez. They were happily married for 63 years. Vincent was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School with the class of 1946. He would then attend SUNY Cortland where he would graduate in 1951. He would go on to join the U.S. Army in 1953 where he would serve his country honorably and faithfully until his discharge in 1955. He then attended SUNY Albany where he would receive his master’s degree. He worked as a teacher for several years before working as a guidance counsellor for over 30 years before his retirement. During this time, he would also serve on the Town of Rotterdam Council for 18 years. The most important thing to him was spending time with his family. He enjoyed hunting with his son and teaching his children and grandchildren how to fish. He also enjoyed playing golf with all his friends he met throughout his political and school career. He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa, his children; Joseph (Echo) Fernandez, Kathy (James) Lupi, Dolores (David) Weaver, and Jennifer (Scott) DeVarnne, his grandchildren; Maria (Nick), Erica (Mike), Vincent, Gabriela, Michael, Kristina (Anthony), Karly, Sean, Steven, and Caroline, his great-grandchildren; Olivia, Emma, Marlo, and A.J., his sister, Dolores DeMarco, and several nieces, nephews, and many close friends. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2020 from 4pm-7pm at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave. Schenectady, NY 12306. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Friday, November 6, 2020 at 10am at St. Gabriel’s Church on Hamburg St. in Rotterdam. Vincent will be laid to rest in St. Cyril’s Cemetery in Rotterdam.
