Schenectady – Vetto Vaitulis passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at the age of 93.
Vetto was born in Guilderland, New York on October 13, 1931 to the late Joseph Vaitulis and Nellie (Varaska) Vaitulis. In his early years, Vetto went to the Pine Bush School, a two room schoolhouse. He graduated from Draper High School in 1950. After graduation, Vetto entered General Electric’s apprentice course. He was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Knox and Germany. Vetto loved to tell stories of his escapades in Europe while on leave from the Army. After returning from the Army, Vetto was employed by General Electric in Utica where he became a tool and die maker. In 1961, Vetto went to work at the Watervliet Arsenal. He was promoted to be the Supervisor of the tool room in 1972, and continued in that role until his retirement in 1987. It was at the Arsenal where he met the love of his life, Marie (Gillick) Vaitulis. Vetto and Marie were married on September 5, 1970 and until Marie’s death separated them in 2020. Vetto enjoyed traveling throughout the US and Canada with Marie, hiking, camping, fishing, gardening, playing chess, and spending time at his farm chatting and laughing with friends and driving his tractor. He was a member of the Schenectady Masonic Lodge No. 1174 in Rotterdam. Vetto was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Vaitulis, and his sister, Aldona Vaitulis.
He is survived by his dear friends Lou Margitan and Rob Marotta, Marge Giedroc, Vern Gross, Joe Weir, Don Provost, Bob Crever, and many others.
A calling hour will be held on Wednesday May 7th from 8:30 to 9:30am at the DeMarco Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam, followed by a service at 9:30am. Burial will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 983 Watervliet Shaker Rd, Albany, NY, where he will be interred next to his beloved wife Marie. Please do not send flowers, instead consider making a donation in Vetto’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
