Schenectady

Thomas M. Vara, 91, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026. Born on April 2, 1935, in Schenectady, NY, Tom was the beloved son of Severiano Vara and Rose Palma Vara. Growing up in the shadow of General Electric, he formed some of his fondest and most enduring memories on Weaver Street, surrounded by a large, close-knit extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A 1953 graduate of the Technical Electrical program at Mont Pleasant High School, it was there that Tom met Barbara, the love of his life. Shortly afterwards, he completed a four-year apprenticeship program to become a Journeyman Machinist at the Watervliet Arsenal. He later earned an Associate Degree in Industrial Technology from Hudson Valley Community College, and retired from the Arsenal in 1990 as an Industrial Specialist, completing 33 years of service.

Tom honorably served his country for nine years in the Air National Guard Air Police, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was also a proud honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, where he achieved the distinguished Fourth Degree title. In his retirement, Tom joined the Mohawk Soaring Club, where he and his pilot were awarded “Flight of the Year,” after reaching an altitude of 7,000 feet in a glider aircraft. Above all, Tom treasured his family. In earlier years, they made lasting memories vacationing at beach resorts along the East Coast. Later in life, his greatest joy was simply gathering around the family table, sharing stories and reminiscing about old times.

Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Barbara Yakubec. He is also survived by his three children: Rick Vara (Julie), Linda Vara Kelley, and David Vara (Rosemary), as well as four cherished grandchildren: Lauren Vara, Thomas Vara, Abby Vara, and Mary Kelley.
