Thomas Austin Smith passed suddenly on Saturday April 5, 2025. Born April 17, 1997 in Albany NY, he is the son of Kellie (Leo) Kinsella and John (Jack) Smith. He graduated from Gilboa High School and took some classes at SUNY Delhi. He then spent some time working for two different town highway departments while also building his tree service business (Tommy’s United Services). After he left the highway departments, he moved to Saratoga Springs and continued to grow his business. At the time of his death, besides being the owner/operator for Tommy’s United Services, also worked at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL).
He is survived by his parents, his grandparents, Thomas and Toni Ann Kinsella (Saratoga Springs), his half brothers John (Stephanie) Smith of Jefferson, NY, Shawn (Brianne) Smith of Grand Gorge, NY, Edward Smith, St Louis, MO, his half sisters Sandra (Eric) Smith, Albany, NY, and Yvette Sanzone of Grand Gorge, NY, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his half brother John Smith Jr.
Tommy was extremely proud of his tree removal service. It was his pride and joy. He started out gathering and selling firewood. He was too young to drive so he had to get his brother or father to help him deliver. He took on contracts to mow lawns at local cemeteries and was always working to build his business and reputation. After moving to Saratoga he expanded his business even more. Once he was able to purchase a bucket truck his business really took off. Any time outside of his job at KAPL he spent fixing his equipment, soliciting business and cutting trees. He took pride in his work and always tried to leave the property with minimal evidence of the work he had just completed. His business grew from mostly word of mouth. He worked hard, respected his clients, was very professional, and always aimed to please. Often working from early morning to late in the evening to complete the job(s). He mostly worked by himself and asked for help only on a few occasions. At KAPL Tommy worked supporting refurbishment efforts of laboratory areas and equipment. He completed a significant amount of training to be able to safely support this work.
Tommy made friends easily and was well liked by everyone. There are no words to describe how much Tommy will be missed. Gone but never ever forgotten. Tommy will live forever in our hearts.
