Amsterdam - Thomas (Tom) Gerard Oropallo, 67, passed away peacefully on Sunday February

1, 2026. Tom was born in Amsterdam, N.Y. and was the son of the late Francis and Mary Joan

Oropallo and stepmother, Carmella Oropallo. He graduated from Amsterdam High School in

1977 and shortly after graduation he joined the United States Navy where he proudly served his

country for 8 years. Following his navy career, Tom spent several years living and working in

San Diego, California. He then relocated to Rotterdam N.Y. and was employed in the

Maintenace department at Canali’s Restaurant for more than 28 years. Tom enjoyed listening to

and singing along with the Country Music greats like Johnny Cash and Alan Jackson, way

before it was cool to like Country Music! He loved his Irish heritage and could frequently be

seen wearing a baseball cap with a shamrock on it. On most days you could find Tom wearing

a T-shirt with a humorous message on it which mirrored his great sense of humor. He was a

“master” garage sale shopper and bargain hunter, never buying anything for himself, always for

a family member or a friend. He would share any gifts that he would receive with those around

him.

Tom couldn’t pass up an opportunity to try to win a stuffed animal in a “Claw” game, which he

was very good at playing!! His nieces and nephews were always the recipients of the prizes he

won. He loved family time, especially playing with his nieces and nephews and grand nieces

and grand nephews. Tom was a beloved son, brother, uncle, grand uncle and friend. He was

loved by all of his nieces and nephews and was affectionately known as “U.T.

” He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Tom’s family would like to thank the staff at Hillcrest

Springs Assisted Living, St. Mary’s Hospital (2nd and 4th floor and ICU staff) and Wilkinson

Nursing Facility (1st floor staff). His family will be forever grateful for the care and compassion

they demonstrated to and for Tom and his family while he was under their care.

Tom is predeceased by his mother, father, stepmother and brother Patrick. He is survived by his

siblings, Michael Oropallo (Debbie), Francis Oropallo (late Marisela), Russell Mahar (Dorene),

Theresa Sorenson, Catherine Saj (Chet), Mary Elizabeth Manderson (Dean), Timothy Oropallo

(Rose), Stephen Oropallo, Patricia Smith, Ann Marie Alteri (Peter), Margaret Semon (Kurt), and

Mark Oropallo (Holly) as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
