Thomas J. Matalavage, 88 formerly of Stamford, NY and North Topsaid Beach, NC, passed away on November 30, 2013 at Kingsway Community in Schenectady. Thomas was born in Mahanoy City, PA, he was the son of the late Thomas and Julia YanuskyMatalavage.He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg State College and was instrumental in the design of a New York State Math Curriculum. Mr. Matalavage was a Math Teacher for over 35 years, starting at Margaretville Central School and retiring from Downsville Central School. He also coached the varsity baseball team. Tom loved his family most of all, but a close second and third were skiing every day, all winter, until the age of 80, and surf casting with the tides in Topsail Beach. His was a life fully lived, and nobody enjoyed their retirement more. In addition to his parents, Thomas was also predeceased by his daughter Jane M. Langer. Thomas leaves behind his loving wife Elizabeth "Betty" Matalavage and his daughter Joan Matalavage, both of Schenectady and his son Thomas (Susan) Matalavage of State College, PA. He will be greatly missed by them and his grandchildren, Cassie Matalavage, Janalee Langer Dwojakowski, Jon Langer, Matt Langer and Abby, Elle and Jon Matalavage and his sister Elizabeth Skokowski. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday evening, from 6-8 pm at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave. Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, 9:15am from the funeral home, followed at 10 am by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Gabriel's Church, 3040 Hamburg St., Rotterdam. Burial will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to a charity of one's choice.
