Rotterdam - Thomas O. Kieran, 75, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 21, 2015 after a courageous battle against Alzheimer's. Tom was born in Albany, NY to the late Owen and Elizabeth (Betty) Kieran.He is predeceased by his loving wife, Nancy Kieran, and his sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Arcuri.Tom is survived by his son, Shawn Kieran (Des Moines, IA) and wife Laura Kieran; his daughter Ellen Kieran-Gerber (Malta, NY) and husband Paul Gerber; and grandchildren, Ian and Alex Gerber.Survivors also include his siblings: Patricia Frankie and husband Martin of Middlebury, VT; Mary Candon and husband Tom of Shelburne, VT; and Michael Kieran and wife Barbara, also of Middlebury, VT; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tom graduated from The Vincentian Institute high school and Russell Sage College.Tom served in the U.S. Navy from 1959-1963 and was on board the U.S.S. Barry during the Cuban Missile crisis.He worked for many years at General Electric in Schenectady as a cost accountant. Tom loved being outdoors and enjoyed camping in the Adirondacks, running, canoeing, bowling, and cross country skiing.In his middle years, Tom was very active in the local running community, participating as a volunteer, board member, and active runner in both the HMRRC and the Adirondack Runners Club.Tom completed numerous running races, from 5ks to marathons including Boston and NYC, triathalons, and canoe races.He was a member of the Northern New York Paddlers. During those years, Tom was also active in NYSIRA and AMEC, car ice-racing clubs.Tom enjoyed watching NASCAR and hockey games and was a long-time member of the former Adirondack Red Wings booster club.He pursued an active life with an enthusiasm that gained him lifelong friends. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. Funeral services will begin 8:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home followed by a 9 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul the Apostle Church, corner of Albany St. & Kings Rd. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Saratoga National Cemetery.
