Thelma L (Shaw) Barnes

March 4, 1925 — October 3, 2015

Schenectady - Thelma Barnes, 90, was born in East Liverpool, Ohio. She left home early and married the love of her life, Bernard F. Barnes, before she was 20. While he served overseas in the 82nd airborne durng World War II, she worked in Washington, DC. With the end of the war, they moved back to East Liverpool to welcome their son, Richard Barnes, into the world. More military movements followed, in Pennsylvania and California, before she returned to Ohio, while he seved in the Korean War. They lived in Virginia while he recovered from wounds, before moving to North Dakota. With his military career at an end and dread of more freezing Dakota winters, they moved to Florida. Years in Florida were followed by a residence back in Ohio. With the marriage of their son, Richard, to his wife, Jeannie, and the birth of two grandchildren, Rick and Julie, another move was in the future for them. They moved to New York to be close to the grandchildren. With the passage of time, Bernie had a stroke and a heart attack, which incapacitated him. Unable to care for himself, she spent 13 years going to a nursing home at least twice a day to feed him, shave him and keep him company until he died nearly 20 years ago. During her long life, she was devoted to the Nazarene Church. She lived to see her grandson, Rick, marry Shannon, and have a son, Noah, and a daughter, Erin. Her granddaughter, Julie, moved to Ireland and married, Karl Power. They have three children, Kyde, Sebastian and Jordan. They have since returned to the United States. We wish friends to celebrate her life during calling hours on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam and at a 10 a.m. funeral service, Wednesday morning, at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene, 2535 Consaul Road, Schenectady, NY 12304.
