Sylvia M. Aylward, of Altamont, NY, passed away on Thursday March 26, 2026 peacefully surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late William (Bill) F. Aylward, Jr., who passed on November 16, 2025, and with whom she shared 67 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Somerville, Massachusetts, Sylvia was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Boston and later completed coursework in psychology and financial services. She and Bill were married in Boston, MA, and began their life together in San Antonio, Texas, while Bill served in the U.S. Army.
The couple later lived in Vermont before settling in Altamont, NY, in the early 1960s, where they raised their family and became deeply rooted in the community. Sylvia was most proud of raising five children with Bill and being a devoted and loving mother to her family.
Later in life, Sylvia pursued a career in banking, working for First Federal Savings, later known as Northeast Savings and Fleet Bank, before retiring. Quietly determined and hardworking, she took great pride in her accomplishments and the example she set for her family.
Sylvia faithfully supported Bill throughout his long career in education and public service, standing beside him during his years serving the Village of Altamont, the Town of Guilderland, and Albany County. A woman of strong Catholic faith, she served as a Eucharistic Minister and supported the Altamont food pantry.
She will be remembered for her feisty spirit, kindness, devotion to family, and the deep love she shared with her children and grandchildren.
Sylvia is survived by her five children: Linda of Norton, MA; Donna (Dan) of Duanesburg, NY; Bill of Delray Beach, FL; Sharon (Matt) of Middletown, NY; and Kevin (Kelly) of Falls Church, VA; seven grandchildren: Nicholas (Kelly), Emily (Chris), Mitchell (Daniella), Chris (Lauren), Caroline, Conner, and Kyle; as well as nieces and nephews from the greater Boston area.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her devoted caregivers, Yvonne, Kelly, Colleen, and Kendra, as well as the Community Hospice team, for their compassion, loving care, and dignity.
