Shirley E Prendergast

Rotterdam- Shirley E. Prendergast, 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 20 at the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia. Born in Amsterdam, NY, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Mildred (Pagie) Faurot. She was happily married to John J. Prendergast for 57 years before his passing in 2005. Shirley graduated from St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam. Upon graduation from high school, she attended St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Amsterdam where she received her registered nursing certificate. Shirley worked at St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady as an RN until she started her family. Later on, she worked part time for F.W. Woolworth at the Shoporama in Rotterdam. Shirley and Jack were communicants and charter members of St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in Rotterdam. An avid reader, Shirley could often be found with a book in hand. She had natural talent for cooking, baking, sewing and knitting. She was devoted to her family and cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is survived by her children; Timothy (Paula) Prendergast, Thomas (Maureen) Prendergast, Kathleen (Joshua) Hermance, Terence (Marilyn) Prendergast, and James (Eva) Prendergast, her grandchildren; Kerry Prendergast (Jason Yenkavitch), Molly (Mat) Robinson, Scott Prendergast, Teresa Hermance (Adam Castle), and Ryan Prendergast, her great-grandchildren; Jack, Maggie, Lila, Mae, Gavin, Elle, Anna, and Ian. A calling hour will be held on Saturday, January 29 from 8:15am-9:15am at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave. Schenectady, NY 12306. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10am at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in Rotterdam. Entombment will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna. The family wishes to thank the staff at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their compassionate care of Shirley. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Shirley’s name to St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 3040 Hamburg St. Schenectady, NY 12303.
