Shirley B. Herchenroder

August 20, 1927 — April 27, 2024

ALTAMONT - Shirley B. Herchenroder, 96, was welcomed to her heavenly home on April 27, 2024.  She was born in Guilderland Center, N.Y. to the late Gustave and Eva (Ogsbury) Ferbert.  She was a member of the last group of students to attend the Cobblestone School House, and then graduated from Voorheesville High School, being voted “Prettiest” in her class.  She worked for the Socony Oil company in Albany until she started a family and raised four children in her beloved Hurst Rd. home that her husband Russ and father Gus built and enjoyed being the hostess there to many church and school visitors from around the world. Once her children started school she returned to work at the Guilderland Central School District, working many years in their Administrative Offices where she eventually retired. Dedicated in her faith, she was a lifelong member of the Helderberg Reformed Church, and a founding member for both the Guilderland Historical Society and the Old Hellebergh Chapter DAR.  She was an avid golfer, equestrian, bowler, cross country skier, swimmer (proudly having swam across Warner‘s Lake), and a talented roller skater in her youth. She volunteered for 25 years at Albany’s Therapeutic riding center. A longtime member of the GCSD Booster Club, she attended countless football and baseball games.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Russell Herchenroder; and two daughters, Leslye (Rodger) Stone and Debra (John) Carlson.  She is survived by her daughter Susan Herchenroder of Howe’s Cave, N.Y., and her son R. Allan Herchenroder of Guilderland Center; four grandchildren Todd (Melissa) Ronda of Hamilton MI, Jodi (Jeff) Eggerding of Grand Rapids, MI, Melissa (Byron) Chartier of Granger IN, John (Suzanne) Faas of Osceola IN, and nine great-grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 11am at the Helderberg Reformed Church, 435 NY-146, Guilderland Center, N.Y. on Tuesday April 30, 2024. There will be a private burial at Prospect Hill Cemetery. You are invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Guilderland Center Fire Station at 2 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Helderberg Reformed Church, PO Box 196, Guilderland Center, N.Y.,12085.
