Scott Richard Walroth, 65, of Niskayuna and Boca Raton, Florida, passed away on June 19, 2024 surrounded by his loving wife and daughters, from complications due to multiple myeloma.
Scott was born in Watertown to Roland and Jacqueline Gaffney Walroth. A 1976 graduate of Watertown High School, his artistic talent emerged at a young age, and he was recognized as an exceptional young artist in school. He played youth hockey, baseball and lacrosse through high school. He later went on to be a prolific artist, and his works were highlighted in many local, regional and national art shows. His art won numerous awards, including “Best of Show” in many competitions.
Scott earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Potsdam, New York State Art Teacher Certification from St. Lawrence University, a Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University, and School District Supervisor Certification from The College of Saint Rose. He taught middle school and high school art at General Brown, Sherburne-Earlville, and Niskayuna school districts. He was an inspirational teacher, impacting the lives of countless young artists, many of whom furthered their artistic endeavors far beyond their school years.
When Scott arrived at Niskayuna Central Schools, he began his role as Director of Art Education. He impacted so many of the art teachers, changing the direction of the department as a visionary and architect for the arts to be accessible to many, not the few. He left a lasting legacy behind in K-12 art education.
On August 4, 1984, he married his college sweetheart, best friend and soulmate, Catherine Granger. Together they raised their beautiful daughters in Norwich, Sherburne and Niskayuna. The family spent many summer vacations with extended family at the family cottage on Lake Ontario. Scott was a stellar husband, father, and grandfather, golfing, swimming and building legos with his four grandsons, and could always be found on the sidelines of their baseball games.
Scott was an avid hockey player throughout his life. He played on adult leagues, both organized and pick-up, and most recently was the organizer of two local “older adult” groups who admired him for his tenacity, continuing to play and manage the teams throughout his cancer battle. He and Catherine were frequent golfers and bicyclists. Among their favorite pastimes was dinner and dancing on Saturday nights. Unknown to many, Scott had a flair for swing dancing, spinning Catherine around the dance floor with smiles and delight.
Scott was predeceased by his parents, his niece Brittany Walroth, and his brother-in-law Jack Dunlap. He is survived by his devoted wife Catherine, his loving daughters Sarah (Shawn) Gluchacki and Mary (Randy) Sweet, and his adoring grandsons Conrad and Miles Sweet and Evan and Cameron Gluchacki. He is also survived by his siblings Stephanie (Tom) Price, Neil (Darlene) Walroth, and Holly Dunlap, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many special friends from all walks of his life who have shown their love and support throughout his life.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 24 from 12 to 2 pm at Demarco-Stone Funeral Home at 1605 Helderberg Ave in Rotterdam, NY, followed by a funeral service at 2pm.
The family would like to thank the entire medical team at Roswell Park at Ellis Medicine for their compassionate and expert care and friendship, as well as Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Institute, throughout Scott’s three-year cancer journey.
