Schenectady – Sallie Ann Joachim, 83, passed away on Saturday, February 5th, 2022 at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center. Sallie was born in Troy, NY, daughter of the late Bentley Sook and Helen Curtis Sook. She attended Emma Willard and graduated from Lansingburgh High School. Sallie went on to earn her bachelor’s in English from Cornell University, her Masters in Teaching from SUNY Oneonta and Masters in Remedial Reading from The College of St. Rose. It was at Cornell that Sallie met her one and only love and soulmate, Andrew Joachim. They married on August 27th, 1967. Sallie taught second grade for a time and then devoted herself to raising her two children, Janet and Eric. She later returned to the workforce in several temporary teaching positions. For the last 15 years of her career, Sallie held the writing specialist position at Hudson Valley Community College. Sallie and Andrew retired to Lake Placid in 2001 to live in a dream house they had built. While there, Sallie let her love of gardening grow. She enjoyed spending lots of time in her flower gardens and served as President of the Garden Club of Lake Placid for several years. She was an avid reader, participating in many book discussion groups throughout her life. She was also a passionate singer taking voice classes, singing in the Adirondack Singers as well as several church choirs. Throughout Sallie’s life, her constant faith kept her grounded. Each Sunday you could find her attending church services, which she greatly enjoyed. Sallie leaves behind her children, Janet A. Self (Athie) and Eric B. Joachim and grandchildren, Margaret and Anna Self. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Andrew and her brother, Prescott Curtis Sook. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 1-3pm at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. A graveside service will take place at 11am on Thursday, May 5th at North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid. Memorial contributions in Sallie’s name may be made to the Garden Club of Lake Placid, Post Office Box 984, Lake Placid, NY 12946.
