Schenectady - Robert Barry Grossman, known as Bob, passed away on January 26, 2022. Bob was born in the Bronx, NY on June 25, 1947 to loving parents, Irving Grossman of the Bronx and his wife, Blanche, born in the United Kingdom. The family later moved to Valley Cottage, NY where Bob graduated from Nyack High School in Rockland County. He attended Mankato State University in Minnesota and Dominican College in Sparkill, NY where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree. During the 1970’s Bob served in the U.S. Army where he achieved the rank of Supply Sargent E6 and was stationed in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, Bob worked for the State of NY in various positions. He retired as a Disbursement Manager. In 1992, Bob married Patricia (Pat) Montone of Schenectady, NY where the couple lived for 29 years in a stone house built by Pat’s grandfather and where Pat continues to reside. It was through Pat, an ardent animal lover, that Bob learned to love cats. Bob and Pat loved to travel. They visited all 50 states and 367 National Parks. And Bob insisted on having entry stamps from each one. He was an avid Civil War buff and philatelist and impressively displayed extensive knowledge in both areas. As a young man, Bob displayed his competitive side playing softball and volleyball. He was a lifelong NY Yankees fan. He also enjoyed exercising his competitive nature playing Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble with friends. And he won most of the time! Bob was an enthusiastic whitewater rafter and rode the rapids on numerous US rivers over the past 50 years. He especially loved the Grand Canyon and rode the mighty Colorado River rapids there six times. Bob summed up his experiences by stating, “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.” Bob is survived by his loving wife, Pat, and the Grossman Family: his brother Jeff, wife, Fran, niece, Samara Grossman and Austin Arbor (fiancé,) nephew, Scott Grossman and wife, Jessica, and their children Benjamin and Madelyn. He is also survived by his uncle, Max Lamm, husband of the late Angela Lassman (Bob’s aunt.) Additional survivors include members of the Montone Family: Pat’s brother, George Montone and his wife, Marie, of Schenectady and their three children, Alecia Thompson of Schenectady, married to Jason Thompson and their children, Alexa, Taylor, and Kilian; nephew Michael Montone and wife Christina of Georgia and their children, Noah, Samuel, Joshua, Jacob, Benjamin, and Giana; Stephen Montone, his wife, Amber, of South Carolina, and their child Kenzie. Bob’s brother-in-law Father Michael Melanson of Schenectady (husband of Pat’s deceased sister, Peggy) and their three children, David Melanson, Carolyn Morisi, and his daughter Lauren,Brian Melanson, his wife Alison and their children Lindsay, Sarah, and James. Scott Melanson, his wife Stephanie, and her sons Brian and Mikey. Bob’s last message to his close circle of friends was, “The last 50 years have been fun.” Visitation with the Grossman and Montone families will be at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Schenectady, NY on Sunday, February 6, from 2pm-5pm followed by a Memorial Service beginning at 5pm.
