Schenectady- Richard “Gene” O’Connor passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 24th, 2025.
Born July 17, 1933, in Albany, NY. Gene was the son of the late Edward F. O’Connor, Sr. and Catherine Cosgrave who died when he was a young child. He was subsequently raised by his loving stepmother, Georgia A. O’Connor (Fox). Gene was predeceased by his former wife, Carol A. O’Connor (Vendetti), and brother Edward F. O’Connor, Jr. (Maureen).
Gene attended Christian Brothers Academy then enlisted and served in the United States Army in Korea, from 1951 to 1954. After serving, he attended and graduated from Albany Business College. He retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years. His interests were golfing, bowling, fishing, gardening, tennis, and relaxing with his faithful feline companion, Anthony. He enjoyed spending winters in Florida, spending time with his family, and winning at playing cards…although he rarely did!
Gene is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy, of 41 years. His greatest achievement was being the father of five wonderful children: Timothy (JR), Teresa, Daniel (Grace), Christopher (Jeanne), and Kevin (Laura), stepfather to Sherri and Scott, and uncle to Carrie (Farley). In addition, he was very proud of his 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
