Schenectady - Richard A. Collins, 62, of Rotterdam, died peacefully on September 17, 2012, at Ellis Hospital, with his family by his side, after a short battle with cancer. Rick was born in Schenectady on March 28, 1950 to the late David H. and Ruth L. (Sudmyer) Collins. Rick began working at General Electric in Schenectady in his early years. In 1973 he began his lifetime career as a Rotterdam Police Officer. In 1983 he was promoted to Police Investigator (Detective Division), retiring from the Police Force in 2005. Rick's greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and their three cocker spaniels at their summer home on the Great Sacandaga Lake. He also loved vacationing in Cape Coral, Florida, while visiting his special friend, Tommy Vitek. Survivors include: his loving wife of 27 years, Cheryl (Griesemer) Collins; his daughters, Jennifer Collins, Michelle (Edward) Cardinal ; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Rachel Cardinal; brother, David (Carole) Collins; other family include, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Rick also leaves behind lifetime friends, Peter Palmier and John Kaliment. At Richard's request there will be no public viewing hours. His private burial will take place in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Rick's name may be made to the American Cancer Society. Rick's family extends a gracious thank you to the A6 'nurse angels' of Ellis Hospital.
