Rotterdam – Richard C. Barnes, 76, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023.
Born June 23, 1946, in East Liverpool, Ohio, Richard was the son of the late Bernard F. and Thelma L. (Shaw) Barnes.
He graduated from Englewood High School in Jacksonville, FL, and later enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969. He was based out of New London, CT where he was stationed in a nuclear submarine during the Vietnam War, serving honorably until 1973.
While on leave during his service, he visited Schenectady where he met and eventually married the love of his life, Jean Puliafico on March 7, 1970. They recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Upon the completion of his military service, Richard went on to earn a BA in History from SUNY Albany.
Richard worked for many years as quality control manager at Breton Industries in Amsterdam, NY before his retirement in 2007.
Richard will be fondly remembered for his quirky and funny personality and sense of humor as well as his huge heart. He always put others before himself and made sure everyone was taken care of. His devotion to his wife and family will be sorely missed.
Richard leaves behind his beloved wife, Jean (Puliafico) Barnes; his son, Rick C. Barnes (Shannon) of Merrimack, NH, their children Noah and Erin and daughter Julie M. Power (Karl) of Rotterdam and their children Kyde, Sebastian, and Jordan.
Services for Richard will be private. He will be laid to rest at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Glenville.
Memorial donations in Richard’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
