Guilderland - CURE, Polly S. - Polly Smith Cure, 89, entered peacefully into eternal rest in the arms of our Lord on Veteran's Day, Monday, November 11, 2013 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, embraced by the love of her family. Polly was born in Kingston, NY on May 10, 1924, to Dr. Reuben Smith and Olive Hill Smith, of Margaretville, NY.She graduated from Margaretville Central High School in 1942 and often spoke with love about the little town in the Catskills where she grew up. In 1945, Polly graduated from Vassar Brothers Hospital Training School, where she earned her RN.Polly was a World War II Army Veteran and served as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Public Health Service at Marine Hospital on Staten Island, lovingly caring for many soldiers as they returned home from the war.She and her fellow nurses moved to West Palm Beach in 1946 and Polly loved the sun, the beach and many good times in Florida. Polly moved back to New York and married Fred Dales Cure, Jr., of Pine Hill, NY on December 24, 1949.Polly worked as an RN in several capacities, including Albany Medical Center and as a substitute nurse in the Guilderland Central School District.Fred and Polly enjoyed a long life together and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1999.Fred passed away in 2001. Her parents and her beloved brother, 2nd Lieutenant Thomas Kingsley Smith, pre-deceased Polly.He was a jet pilot in the Air Force, a hero who prevented his disabled jet fighter from crashing into a German village in 1954. Diagnosed at age 28 with Multiple Sclerosis, Polly fought her disease with courage and determination, always caring for others who were ill, in the hope that someday a cure would be found for MS.She is survived by her loving son, Peter T. Cure (Linda) of Altamont, and was the adored "NaNa" of Christopher, Emily and Lea Cure. Polly's family would like to extend our special thanks and gratitude to the Rosary staff at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, Polly's home for over 6 years.Polly's quick wit and love of nursing was cherished by her nurses and aides, who treated her with great dignity and respect. She was '˜family' to the entire staff.We are forever grateful to each of you for the incredible loving care she received.We would also like to thank Community Hospice and Reverend Bob Luidens for assisting Polly in her journey '˜home'. A Memorial Service honoring and celebrating Polly's life will be held at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 5216 Western Ave., Guilderland on Monday, November 18th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.Reverend Bob Luidens will officiate.
