SCOTIA - Peter Joseph Northup, 70, passed away on Saturday May 17, 2025 at home after a long illness. He was born on June 2, 1954 in Providence, RI to the late Raymond Northup and Mary Masterson Rochira. After graduating high school, Peter joined the military in 1972 and served during Vietnam. After being honorably discharged, he went on to receive a Masters of Arts from the University of Albany, in Near Eastern Archeology, with a concentration in Sumerian translation. Peter worked as a machinist & technical writer for the Watervliet Arsenal for 16 years, ending a 23 year career with the United States Military and had just retired. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam and of The Rotterdam Elks.
Peter is survived by his wife, Lori Cilberti; his sons, Peter Northup II (Jody Brust), Edward Louis Northup (Alysha Karl), and Gilbert Stewart Northup (Zakiyah Hasan-Northup); his grandchildren, Mazhé Northup, Sophia Northup, Charlotte Northup, Finnigan Northup, Maddox Northup, Gabriella Northup, and Leonardo Northup; his brother, Michael Northup; his sister, Mary Dikervitz (Richard).
Peter has been privately cremated. Memorial calling hours will be held on Wednesday May 28th from 5 to 7pm at the DeMarco Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave, Rotterdam, followed by a service at 7pm. He will be interred with military honors at Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Mary’s Institute, 10 Kopernik Blvd. Amsterdam, NY 12010.
