In Loving Memory of Paz Oydegaard
Paz Oydegaard, 89, of Guilderland, New York, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly while surrounded by her loving family on June 24, 2026.
Born on April 7, 1937, in Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines, Paz was the beloved daughter of the late Roque Radaza Ubaldo and Catalina Tolibas Ubaldo. Inspired by her father, a respected trial lawyer, she pursued a degree in law and, upon graduating, joined his law practice in Tacloban. She later moved to Manila to continue her legal career before eventually settling in California, where she met the love of her life, the late Michael Oydegaard. They were married and later made their home in New York's Capital Region, where they enjoyed many happy years together and where Paz was able to be close to her beloved sister, Emma Aliwalas, and her family.
Paz dedicated many years of service as an employee of New York State in downtown Albany before retiring. In her later years, she found a welcoming community at The Promenade Senior Living in Guilderland. She deeply appreciated the friendships she formed there and the compassionate care and companionship provided by the residents and staff, who became an important part of her life.
Paz is survived by her beloved younger sister, Dr. Emma Aliwalas (Julio Sr); her brother, Romeo Ubaldo (Teresita); her nephews, Francisco (Ritsuko) Aliwalas, Julio Aliwalas, Jr., Ricardo (Helen) Aliwalas and Eduardo Aliwalas, and Melchor Ubaldo (Chinkee); her niece, Angela Gormate (Jeff); her three great-nephews; and three great-nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Oydegaard; her parents; and her brother-in-law, Dr. Julio L. Aliwalas.
Those who knew Paz will remember her for her radiant smile, gentle heart, generous spirit, and infectious laughter. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and at ease, and her warmth and kindness touched everyone she met. She loved dancing, attending parties and social gatherings, watching television and live performances, and playing the piano. Above all, she treasured the time she spent with family and friends, creating memories filled with laughter, love, and joy.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Paz was an active member of Capital District BLD (Bukas Loob sa Diyos), a Filipino Roman Catholic covenant community. Her faith sustained and guided her throughout her life, inspiring her to live with compassion, humility, and gratitude. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, resilience, and quiet generosity that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, July 10, with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. Madeleine Sophie Church in Guilderland, New York. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Child Society at St. Madeleine Sophie Church in Guilderland, New York.
Paz's life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten.
