Paul A. Ungerland

Paul A. Ungerland (“Ungy”) was called to his eternal home with the Lord on Monday August 31, 2026. Born on December 18, 1957, Paul passed away at Life Care Center Wells Crossing in Orange Park, Florida, following a steady decline in health that began in May 2019. There is comfort in knowing he was reunited with his wife, Claudia (Battalino) Ungerland, in time to celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary on September 4th. Paul was predeceased by his parents, John Sr. and Jacqueline (McLaughlin) Ungerland; his brothers, John Jr., Joseph, and James Ungerland; his nephew, Peter J. Ungerland Jr.; and his Parents-In-Law, Gilda and Em Battalino.

Paul is survived by three siblings Peter (Marianne) Ungerland Sr, Jackie (John) Dickinson and Mary (Bud) Boston, Sister-In-Law JoAnn Ungerland, Sister-In-Law Stacy Ungerland and Brother-In-Law Terry Battalino along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Paul was born at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center, New York. The family lived in Massapequa Park, Long Island before relocating to Elmira Heights, New York where he was raised. He graduated from Edison High School in 1976, where he was regularly involved in sports and notably, was the lead as Captain von Trapp in the school's production of The Sound of Music during his senior year.

In his youth, Paul was always involved in his community through local organizations, sports, work, and volunteering. He was in Little League Baseball, the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), an annual Junior and Senior member of the Mark Twain Golf Course, playing regularly with siblings and friends from neighborhoods on both sides of the golf course, and high school golf team member (All County 1975/1976). Paul was raised in a large family of seven children that delivered newspapers to the neighborhood and worked after school hours and weekends as a janitor at St Patrick’s School and Church, Elmira, New York through Junior High.

Despite health challenges that developed in his young adulthood, Paul lived a full life. He earned his associate degree from Corning Community College in 1978 and his Bachelor of Science from the University at Albany in 1980, choosing to make Albany his home after graduation. Paul was a car salesman in his young adult years and continued in various sales jobs throughout his life. Paul was a member of the Capital District Baseball Umpires Association, the Old Timers Baseball Club, and was a lifetime member of the Rotterdam Elks Lodge. He proudly chaired the annual NYS Elks Junior Golf Tournament for years and the Elks charity fund-raiser bus trip to the PGA Greater Hartford Open/Travelers Championship for 34 years. It was through golf that he met his wife, Claudia, at the Rotterdam Elks Lodge. They enjoyed many golf dates, travel, and family gatherings.

Thank you to the staff of Vitas Hospice (Jacksonville, Florida) and Life Care Center Wells Crossing (Orange Park, Florida) for keeping Paul comfortable and cared for, especially during Paul’s final days. Paul knew and talked about how blessed he was to have his family to ensure he was cared for in his later years. Ultimately, it was the Catholic Church, God’s grace, and deep faith that guided the family in Paul's care plan. May Paul rest in eternal peace.

Calling hours will be held on Friday October 2, 2026 from 8am to 10am at the DeMarco Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave, Rotterdam, NY 12306 followed by a memorial service at 10am. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 100 Kings Rd., Schenectady, NY.
