Rotterdam- Paul A. Simmons 85, at rest Sunday October 14, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Paul was born in Bradenton, Florida, the son of the late Frank and Hettie (Landress) Simmons. After high school, Paul served a stint in the Army. An excellent athlete, he played professional baseball as a catcher with the Schenectady Blue Jays in 1951, and 1955-56. He met his future wife Angela DeAngelo while playing for the Blue Jays. His entire career spanned 9 seasons, most notably with teams affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies and Athletics. After retiring from baseball due to injury, he made Rotterdam his home. He was the Town of Rotterdam Plumbing Inspector for many years; retiring from this position. Paul was active for many years in local youth baseball, serving as mentor for innumerable ballplayers. He coached, managed and won championships with teams from Carman Little League, Rotterdam Babe Ruth, Connie Mack and the Schenectady Mohawk Travel Team. He was a longtime member of St. Gabriel's Church. Paul and Angela enjoyed wintering at their home in Fort Myers Beach, Florida for many years. Paul was the beloved husband of 59 years to the late Angela Marie (DeAngelo) Simmons who died July 9, 2012; beloved father of Paul B. (Kelly) Simmons of Williamsville, N.Y., David A. Simmons of Rotterdam and Gregg A. (Elizabeth) Simmons of Brunswick, N.Y.; loving grandfather of Courtney and Kyle Simmons and the late Diane Angela Simmons; beloved brother of Ervine Braddock of Jacksonville, FL., Joshua (Phyllis) Simmons of Bradenton, FL., Jim (Connie) Simmons of Bradenton, FL., Mary (Raymond) Crowley of Chincoteague Island, VA., and the late Earl, Ray and Martha Simmons; beloved brother-in-law of Nicholas (Barbara) DeAngelo of East Aurora, N.Y. Paul is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 18th from 8:30 to 10:30am at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Avenue, Rotterdam. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am at St. Gabriel's Church, 3040 Hamburg St. Rotterdam. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery, Schenectady. In lieu of flowers contributions in Paul's name may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, N.Y. 10018 or Community Hospice of Schenectady, 141 Union St., Schenectady, N.Y. 12308 Paul's family wishes to thank the entire staff of Community Hospice of Schenectady; Barbara Burns, the staff of Living Resources, and David Nash for their kind care of Paul.
