KINGSTON - Nicholas Anthony Mauro, Jr., known to his loved ones as Nick or Junior, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023, at the age of 89 in Kingston, NY. He was born on October 16, 1934, in Schenectady, NY, to the late Nicholas A. Mauro Sr. and Mary D. (De Marco) Mauro.
Nick was a devoted father, a loving son, and a loyal friend. He was an accomplished outdoorsman, happiest when afield hunting with his family and friends, and spending time at his hunting camp in West Fulton, NY. Nick also had an equal passion for fishing and enjoyed competition trap and skeet shooting. He was a founding member of the Niskamont Rod and Gun Club in Guilderland, NY, and a member of the Lake Katrine Rod and Gun Club in Kingston, NY. Later in life, he enjoyed playing low handicap golf. Possessed with a quick wit, a measured voice, and a strong work ethic. He held firm beliefs and values and expected others to match his standards. He had a ready smile and good-hearted nature, favored very good scotch and never had an impediment in his reach for the check.
Nick is survived by his children, Michael A. Mauro, Katherine M. Emsing, her husband John Emsing, Linda S. Gresens, Jill Cahill-Step Daughter and her husband Patrick, his grandchildren, Jonathan McCann, Chelsea McCann, Brianne Cahill and Patrick Cahill, and his great-grandsons Jonathan McCann II, and Zain Soto. He is also survived by nephews Chester Mauro Jr, David Ridley, Evan and John DeMatteo Jr, nieces Carol Ann Kelly and Donna Ridley and numerous cousins and other relatives.
Nick was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas A. Mauro, Sr., his mother, Mary D. (DeMarco) Mauro, his brother, Chester N. Mauro, his sisters, Delores Ridley and Bernadine DeMatteo, his wife, Doris Mauro, and his stepson, Craig Plough.
Nick graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady, NY.
His career began as a newspaper carrier for the Schenectady Union Star, where he received an award for outstanding performance. He advanced within the paper to become the Manager of the Circulation Department. Nick's expertise led him to the position of Circulation Director for the Kingston Daily Freeman and eventually as a traveling problem solver for the Ingersoll chain. He concluded his distinguished career in the industry as a valued member of the Albany Times Union, retiring in 1999.
Nick was a Communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Schenectady, NY, where he served as an altar boy.
When not outdoors, Nick enjoyed engaging in friendly poker and pinochle games with his family and friends, often followed the New York Yankee games in the tradition of his father, and made an amazing spaghetti sauce.
A memorial service in remembrance Nick's life will be held at a later date.
Nick Mauro, Jr. will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
