Mildred E. Szemela, 88, died Saturday, March 9, 2013 at home after a short illness. Mildred was born on August 28, 1924 in Scotia, NY to Roy and Alice Adams Hammill. She attended Scotia-Glenville school, graduating with the class of 1942. She worked at General Electric with Finserv. Most recently she was a crossing guard at Craig and Lincoln Avenue in Schenectady. She was a member of Saint Columbus Catholic Church and also was a member of the Rosary society. Her Her passions were traveling with her husband, Bob, to Las Vegas and spending time with family and friends at their camp on Sacandaga. She loved getting together with her friends, helping with transportation to appointments or just getting together for lunch or playing games. She could be found at the Saratoga County Home Bureau where she taught many people how to knit and crochet. She will be remembered as an angel as she touched many lives while she was here. Mildred goes to her eternal rest with the love of her life, Robert Szemela, who passed in 1995. They were married August 20, 1950. She leaves behind her son, Tom (Roberta) Szemela of Saratoga; daughter, Joann (Paul) Canary of Rotterdam; two grandchildren, Deanna and Jessica Canary; her sister, Audrey Crawford and several nieces and nephews. Also survived by her friend and caregiver, Andrea Johnson, whom the family gives a special thank you for her extra care and friendship to Mildred. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Patricia Szemela, who passed in 2011. Calling hours 5 to 7 p.m. this evening at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Avenue, Rotterdam, NY. A funeral service will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10a.m. at the funeral home. Burial Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to AnimalProtective Foundation, 53 Maple Avenue, Scotia, NY 12302-4613.
