Schenectady – With heavy hearts, the family of Mickey (Michael) Schellenger is saddened to announce his passing, Sunday October 6, 2024. This story started April 1st, 1969 when a beautiful baby boy was born to Rosa Schellenger. The youngest of eight, five boys and three girls. Mickey (55) is predeceased by his mother Rosa and sister Linda. He is survived by his wife Tracy, his sons Jordan (Danielle), Zachary (Perri), his grandsons Anthony and Watson, his brothers James (Jeong), Larry (Vickie), John, Carl, his sisters Donna and Tina, many nieces, nephews, and loving aunts and uncles.
Mickey loved to be outdoors: camping, doing yardwork, searching for alligators or deer, hanging with his brothers at Americade, fires poolside, or just sharing stories in the back yard. For his 50th birthday, he got to swim with the dolphins, fulfilling one of his lifelong dreams. You could often find Mickey with his closest friends, known as Picky Mickey and the Foodies at any restaurant in the area that would serve him some chicken parm. Recently to everyone’s surprise, he fell in love with gyoza, tempura chicken, and sake.
Mickey lived his life to the fullest, despite the many health obstacles that were thrown his way. He was loved by so many and loved them all back with everything he had. His biggest love and his best friend was his wife Tracy. They cherished every moment they had together, and he leaves her with many wonderful memories. They traveled when they could, and recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary with a battery powered candlelit dinner at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital. She was the love of his life, and he was hers.
His grandsons were his favorite playmates. He loved building blocks and Legos with Anthony, snuggling up with Watson, and playing fetch with his grandpuppy Tito. He was excited to be back on the football field watching Anthony carry on the love for the sport. He looked forward to the many more grandbabies to come. But most of all, he was his boy’s biggest fan. No matter what sporting event it was, baseball, basketball, bowling, football, rugby, or soccer, he was there to cheer them on, or yell at the referee. He never missed a game, except for the ones he was thrown out of. He could not have been prouder of his boys and the men they have become. He loved his daughter-in laws as if they were his own.
Through the years people would say “you should write a book”. The fact is, there is so much more to his story, but the final chapter can never be written. The memories we all hold in our hearts, and the generations that will come, will continue to write the story.
A special thank you to The Kidney Transplant Department and Dr. Conti’s Team at Albany Medical Center for the gift of life. Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital and La Torre Orthopedic Laboratory for the gift of walking. All of the wonderful doctors, nurses, and medical staff who touched his life throughout the years. Especially, Dr. Arthur Lee and Dr. Thomas Schumacher and their teams.
