Michael Musella

January 20, 1961 — February 23, 2017

Michael Musella passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC, with his wife, Susan, and sister-in-law, Mary, holding his hands bedside. Friends Sondra and Daniel Freilich provided great comfort minutes later. He was born on JFK’s inauguration January 20, 1961, a fact he pointed out fondly, and often, in Schenectady, NY. He was the son of Vincent and Philomena Musella, who are both resting in Saratoga National Cemetery. Michael married Susan Reinertson on April 6, 2013. Michael is survived by Susan-Alexandria, VA; brother Vincent-Hudson Falls, NY; sister Christine (Dennis) Peruzzini-East Aurora, NY; and nephew Nicholas (Sylvia). He adored his great-nephew, Nicholas “Nico” Gaiani, son of his niece, Alissa (Vincent) Gaiani-Washington, DC-who provided comfort and joy during his illness. Michael is also survived by many cousins, including Jim (Karen) DeMidio, who provided loving and needed support over the past several months. His love for Susan’s siblings and their spouses-Bob and Sally Reinertson-Wausau, WI; John and Jan Reinertson-Reading, PA; Mary and Tom Sand-Grand Forks, ND-nephews Taylor, Sam, Paul, Matthew, and niece Emily was endearing. Since his own father’s passing, he developed a bond and loving relationship with his father-in-law, Bob Reinertson-Grand Forks, ND, with whom he talked golf, weather and current events every Sunday. His love for his friends and family was unconditional. His passion for life made a lasting impression on every single person fortunate enough to have encountered him. Michael was a man of patriotism with much respect for this country and her flag. He was a retired Captain of the U.S. Army, and proud of his service-but mostly for the service of others. Michael’s proudest professional moments of the last decade were managing the teams responsible for working with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Liberty State Park to recover from the damages incurred by Hurricane Sandy, as well as working with Monmouth and Ocean Counties, NJ to recover from the damages incurred by Hurricane Irene. Per Michael’s wishes, a private viewing will be held. On Friday, March 3, 2017 at 1 pm sharp, he will be interred with military honors at Saratoga National Cemetery. A Memorial/Celebration of Life will be held at the City Mission Chapel, 313 Clinton Street in Downtown Schenectady, on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 10:30 am. Both the interment and the Memorial/Celebration of Life are open to family and friends. Memorial donations are encouraged to be considered for the City Mission of Schenectady and the USO.
