Rotterdam - Michael A. Chiofalo 74, passed away at home on December 10,2023 after along illness with his loving family by his side . Mike was born in Schenectady on December 11, 1948, the son of the late Albert and Sandra Chiofalo.
Michael graduated from Mohonasen High School in 1966, Hudson Valley Community College in 1968 and Murray State University in 1970. He also held licenses with the Nation Association of Security Dealers.
Michael served in both the United States Navy and the United States Army from 1969 to 1981. While an enlisted man, he signed up for Officer's Candidate School and subsequently was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. While in the service he was trained in several military specialties, and held a number of positions including General's aide-de-camp, and Company Commander leaving the military with the rank of Captain.
Michael was working for Vocational Education of the New York State Education Department when he had to retire due to health problems after 23 years of service in 1999.
Michael was very civic minded and loved to coach children's sports and was inducted into the Boulevard Junior’s Hall of Fame. He was a Life Member of the Carman Volunteer Fire Department. He first joined the Department in 1967 and left for college and Military Service. He rejoined the Department in 1983 and was a member until the time of his death, He also held a number of positions including Fire Commissioner and Department Secretary
Without a doubt, his greatest pleasure was playing with his grandchildren, to whom he was known as "Papa", and he always tried to live by his own personal code of honor.
Survivors include his bride of 50 years,LaDonna Brown Chiofalo; beloved children, daughter Aimee Fox, son Aaron, sister Cathy (Craig) Simon of New Jersey, brother Thomas (Scott) of Massachusetts, and his very special grandchildren Trevor and Gavin Fox, Gina, Ariana, Braydon and Aaron Jr, Chiofalo, and Great Grandchidren Kinsley & Alora. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews he loved dearly.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3-5 pm at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 am Monday at St. Gabriel’s Church 3040 Hamburg St., Rotterdam.
Burial, with military honors, will follow at Saratoga National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carman Fire Department, the National Kidney Foundation or St. Gabriel’s Church.
