Guilderland – Matteo Sangiovanni, age98, peacefully passed away at his home in Guilderland on Sunday, March 12th, 2023. He was born in Caiazzo, Province of Caserta, Italy, to the late Giovanni and Laura Sangiovanni. At the age of 46, Matteo and his wife made the difficult and courageous decision to immigrate to the United States, even though they did not speak English. They were fortunate to have family who helped them through the transition. Matteo spent many years as a machinist at the General Electric Company before retiring. Matteo found joy in the simple pleasures in life, such as sitting outside in the sunshine, relaxing at the ocean, gardening, hunting, playing bocce with family, and making wine. Above all, he treasured the time he spent with his family, especially playing his accordion for his great-grandchildren and watching them delight in the music. Matteo was predeceased by his beloved wife of 71 years, Anna (Audi) Sangiovanni, his son Anthony Sangiovanni and daughter-in-law Rita, and his brother, Joseph Sangiovanni. He is survived by his children, Giovanni Sangiovanni (Filomena) and Maria Bianchi (Jerry); grandchildren, Anna Maria Sangiovanni, Matteo Fabrizio Sangiovanni, Rosario Sangiovanni, Joseph Anthony Sangiovanni, Deborah Sangiovanni, Daniela Bigalli and Joseph Bianchi; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Antonio, Maria Rosaria, Giulia, Jovani, Bianca, Roo, Giuliana and Talek. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will take place on Friday from 8am-10am at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. A mass of Christian burial will follow at 11am at St. Madeleine Sophie Church, 3500 Carman Rd., Schenectady, NY 12303. Matteo will be laid to rest with his wife, Anna, at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
