Born on September 13, 1948, in Calvello, Italy she was born to Antonio and Maria Antonia Nardozza. Maria relocated to Schenectady, NY in 1970 with her beloved husband, Giuseppe, and lived a life full of grace, warmth, and unwavering love. She was the heart of the family and a constant source of strength, wisdom, and comfort. Always with a smile, she had a gift of making others feel seen and loved, whether through kind words, generous spirit, or quiet acts of kindness.
Known to everyone as “Nonna”, one of the greatest expressions of Maria’s love was through her cooking. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, where she poured her soul into every meal. Sunday dinners were a sacred tradition, a time when family gathered around her table to share food, stories, and laughter. Whether it was her famous meatballs, chicken cutlets, or a simple home-cooked meal, she fed both body and soul with nobody being allowed to leave without taking a plate home. These meals became more than just food, they were a reminder of her love, generosity, and the importance of being together
As a devout Catholic, she attended mass every Sunday at St. Anthony’s church while carrying on her devotion to God into her home and family life.
In addition to her parents, Maria is predeceased by her siblings Caterina, Rocco and Pietro. She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Giuseppe D’Elia, her brother, Franco, her children - Maria Antonietta Knowles (Lance), Giovanna Baier and Vincenzo D’Elia, her grandchildren - Maria-Cristina Priest (Cha), Giuseppe Carberg (MiKaylee), Christian Baier, Giuseppe D’Elia, Liliana D’Elia, Santino D’Elia, Giada D’Elia, and Cateleya Sheffer-D’Elia and Her great grandchildren - Lorraina Marie Priest and unborn baby girl and many nieces and nephews as well as her four legged fur baby, Luca Meatball.
Though she is no longer with us, her love remains an eternal light that continues to guide and comfort us. Her recipes, her laughter, and her stories will continue to be passed down around the table for generations to come. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
