Louis Mauro

February 14, 1939 — November 17, 2024

Louis Mauro, 85, passed away on Sunday November 17, 2024. Lou was born on February 14, 1939 to the late Frank and Rose Furlano Mauro. Lou was very proud of his Italian heritage, being a son of humble immigrants, and being a first generation American. Lou was born in Schenectady, educated in its public schools, and worked 34 years in its public schools. Lou graduated with honors from Mont Pleasant High School, the class of 1957. He was a starter on its football and baseball teams. Lou earned a full scholarship to Siena College, The Presidential Scholarship. It was here at Mont Pleasant High School that Lou met the love of his life, Marlene Mastroianni. They were 16 years old when their love affair started. Marlene was his partner in life and best friend. Marlene was Lou’s strength and support. They were married on August 20, 1960. Lou earned his first master’s degree from Siena College in 1964 and two more master’s degrees from SUNY Albany, and a Superintendent's Certificates doing all of this as a part time student and working full time. Lou often said that Marlene’s name should be on all of these degrees for all the sacrifices she made during all these years. Lou worked 34 years with the Schenectady City School District as a teacher, guidance counselor, and junior and senior high school principal. He was the last principal at Mont Pleasant High School. Lou’s greatest joy in education was seeing his former students grow and become contributing citizens. Lou was a member of the Catholic faith. Jesus was an important part of his life. At Siena College Lou was elected treasurer of the student senate. In his jr year as a senator, one of his duties was to be an altar server at morning Masses in the chapel. A duty Lou has to learn at age 20.

Lou was predeceased by his parents. His wife Marlene passed away after 51 happy years together on December 26, 2011. His son Frank A. Mauro passed away October 29, 2003 and his wife Lisa on July 21, 1992. Lou also lost his great grandson Mason Parker Lupi at birth February 9, 2018. His four grandchildren, Matthew Lupi (Samantha), Krista Tsutras (Frank "Tino" Tsutras), Louis Mauro (Brianna), and Brittany Fazzone (Salvatore). Lou affectionately referred to Brittany as “Little Marlene” and Teri as his guardian angel. Lou leaves behind three great grandchildren, Gianni Fazzone, Hunter Lupi, and Tucker Lupi. Lou is also survived by his sister, Francine LaFlamme; sisters in law, Jeanette Polito (Jim), Josephine Coppola, and Donna Essery (Jim).
