Louis F "Chick" Mangino

February 5, 1936 — October 28, 2022

Schenectady - Louis F. “Chick”Mangino, 86, of Schenectady, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 28, 2022. Born in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Louis, Sr. and Carmella (Saburro) Mangino. He was the devoted husband of Marlene (DeMarzio) Mangino whom he married on May 5, 1957. A graduate of Draper High School, Louis went to work for the A&P Grocery Store and General Electric Company, after which he was employed by UPS for 10 years. He resigned from UPS to pursue an entrepreneurial opportunity. He opened the Arrow Restaurant in Schenectady where he was the sole proprietor for over 20+ years. Known for his legendary steak and sausage sandwiches, many traveled from distant places to taste Chick’s secret sauce recipe. A lifetime of memories with loyal clientele filled this family centric neighborhood establishment. Much to the delight of the restaurant patrons, Disney’s Gentle Ben was a most honored guest to celebrate the birthday of a local newscaster in the 70s. The Arrow Restaurant’s ‘15 minutes of fame’ was televised on the news as the bear dined on a few steak sandwiches chased with a pitcher of beer! Chick led a life touched with grace and a calm, easy manner that made everyone feel welcome. A consummate trumpet player, Chick started his own band called the Hi-Fi’s. With his brother- in- law, Cyril Romleski (Zeke) and a group of close friends they entertained both locally and along the Eastern seaboard to the delight of many in the 50s and 60s. Their travel stories were most heart warming and reminiscent of those wonderful and time treasured borscht belt holidays of yesteryear. Louis served in the Air National Guard in his younger days. Upon retiring from the restaurant business, Louis went on to work for the federal government and continued his military service as a Sergeant First Class with the Army National Guard, at the Division of Military and Naval Affairs in Latham, NY. Chick could often be found working side by side with his late brother, Eugene at Gene’s Auto Sales. An avid golfer, he grew tired of the long arduous winters in the Northeast. With the delight of a child in an amusement park, he waited with breathless anticipation for each New Year when he would head to Florida for the winter to take a few swings on the links in the sunshine state; Much to the amusement of his family, polishing his golf clubs upon his Florida arrival was the order of the day. To continue Chick’s memory are his beloved wife of 65 years, Marlene (DeMarzio) Mangino. He is survived by his children, Michael Mangino, Gregory (Michele) Mangino, Lisa (Zoran Raskovic) Mangino, and Kimberley (Frank) DeMasi. Chick is also survived by his sister, Shirley (Jerry) Sagliocca, his sister-in-inlaw, Barbara Mangino, his brother-in-law, Louis DeMarzio, grandchildren, Alisha (Jeremy) Tryon, Thomas Mangino, Kayla Mangino, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
