Lois (Honey) Ellen Baker

Schenectady -Our family deeply mourns the loss of our beloved mother and grandmother, Lois Ellen Baker (Honey), 89, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 4th, 2023 at the Home of the Good Shepherd in Malta. Lois was born on October 26, 1933 in Schenectady, NY and was the daughter of Viola and Clark Sigsbee. She was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School in 1951 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Cortland State University in 1955. While attending Cortland State, she was a member of the Arethusa Sorority for 4 years and was a Life Guard during the summers. After graduation she accepted a 4th grade teaching position at Sixteen Acres in Springfield, Mass. Lois married Willard (Bill) Baker on August 18, 1956. They then moved to Schenectady where she taught 4th grade at the Schonowe Elementary School. Once her children were grown, she worked for the Town of Rotterdam in the Controller’s office from 1982 – 2001 when she retired. Lois was an avid reader and loved to play tennis and bridge with her friends. She also enjoyed cross country skiing, working in her flower garden and feeding her birds. Lois dedicated her life to raising her family and she was the number one fan at her husband’s basketball games and loved to watch her children and grandchildren play sports and go sailing. Jigsaw puzzles were a particular favorite and she enjoyed a good card game of Liverpool with family at her camp on Galway Lake. Lois and her husband Bill traveled often and one of their favorite vacation spots was in Maine, where they loved to stop and see the Nubble Lighthouse and walk the Marginal Way. She was a lifelong member of the Bellevue Reformed Church where she held the position of Treasurer and volunteered at Ruth’s Place on a weekly basis. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Deborah Wilday (Stuart) of Galway, Kim Smith (Jeff) of Clifton Park, and two sons, Dennis Baker (Lisa) of SC and Roger Baker (Eileen) of CT. She loved her grandchildren dearly, Courtney, Pam, Katie, Steven, Matt and Christian of Galway NY and William, Daniel, Jennifer and Nicholas of Greenville SC. She also loved her step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, CarylCameron (Bob) of Florida and nieces, Karen and Stacey,brother, Clark Sigsbee and his children, Christian, Mike and Trisha, sister-in-law Lois Gaskins (Jim) niece Meredith Allen (Terrance, Maya, Paige) of Wyndmoor PA. A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 29th from 10am-11am at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 11am. Lois will be laid to rest at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Guilderland. The family would like to offer their deepest gratitude to the staff of The Home of Good Shepard & The Community Hospice of Saratoga. Being an animal lover….In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite animal rescue or Saratoga Hospice in Lois’s name.
