Rotterdam - Leona B. Doberneck, 81, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013, at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Schenectady, Leona was the daughter of the late Lee and Aldina Martini, and a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. Prior to raising her family she was employed by the General Electric Co. Leona was a homemaker for several years and during that time volunteered at the St. Clare's Hospital admitting office. She later returned to work as a medical secretary for the late Dr. Gabriel DeBlase, retiring in 1991. Leona was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and very active in Church activities. She was a former member and President of the St. Therese Guild, and current member of the Mt. Carmel Women's Society and Mt. Carmel Seniors. Leona was also the kitchen chairperson of the Church Festa for many years. She was always busy either in her kitchen or garden. Some of her favorite things to do were making homemade pasta, meatballs and sauce, and baking cookies for many family occasions. She also loved spending time in her garden, planting flowers and growing vegetables. Leona is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, William J. Doberneck. In addition, she is survived by three loving daughters; Debra (Thomas) Dalton of Rotterdam, Donna (Vincent) Lowndes of Poughkeepsie, and Diane (Michael) Nagle of Guilderland. The proud grandmother of Brian, Allison, Sara, and Benjamin Dalton; James, Ellen and Daniel Lowndes; and Andrew and Emily Nagle. The dear sister of Sylvia (Robert) Donahue, Roberta (Edward) Vacca, and John (Jacqueline) Martini. She also enjoyed being "Auntie" to several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be celebrated 11 am Thursday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 1255 Pleasant St., Schenectady. The DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam, will be open Thursday morning from 8:30 am - 10:30 am at which time family and friends are invited to call. Private family burial will be at the convenience of the family.
