Josephine Hamel of Schenectady, New York, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026.
She was born on December 4, 1927, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Pietro and Jenny (née Volpe) Baio, two immigrants from Sicily who left their homeland in search of a better life. For this, their descendants are eternally grateful.
Born just before the Great Depression, life was not easy. However, she was fortunate to have aunts, uncles, and cousins living only a few blocks away, and there was always Sunday dinner at Grandma’s.
She met the love of her life, Salvatore, through an introduction by her cousins, and they were married in late 1950. A few years later, they moved to Brooklyn, where they raised their family. Sadly, Salvatore passed away far too soon, and Josephine found the strength to begin a new chapter on her own.
She worked for many years in the toy department of a local department store, a job that came in very handy whenever one of her grandsons was searching for the latest Power Rangers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures.
Josephine was fiercely independent and lived on her own until the age of 96. In addition to her beloved husband, Salvatore, she was predeceased by her brothers, Charles, Angelo, and Alphonso.
She is survived by her son, Pat (Betty), and their children, Billy, Craig (Lizzy), and Sean (Nicole); and by her daughter, Mary-Ann (Joe) Salamone, and their children, Frank, Joey (Macey), and Michael.
Josephine will be remembered for her strength, her unwavering devotion to her family, and the love she expressed through life’s simple traditions. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date.
