Rotterdam – Joseph J. Giordano, 91, passed away after a short illness on Saturday, March 25th, 2017 at Ellis Hospital Residential and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Schenectady to the late Frank and Nunziata (Marra) Giordano, Joseph was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School and attended Albany Business College. Directly after high school Joseph enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a result of the outbreak of World War II. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945 and earned the rank of Corporal. Early in life Joseph worked at the General Electric Company. After attending Albany Business College, he started work at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Albany in 1959 and retired in 1988 as director of purchasing and facility services. Joseph was instrumental in starting the St. Vincent De Paul Society at Our Lady of Assumption Church in 1958 where he served as treasurer for many years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church where he actively participated in the annual Festa. He was also a member of the Eastern Administrative Services Purchasing Council. Joseph was an avid hunter and fisherman; he enjoyed bowling in the Italian Merchants Bowling League and being a member of Matt’s Grill Football Club. He was a fan of baseball, football and golf. His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events. Joseph was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gilda Barca Giordano in 2010. He is also predeceased by 5 sisters and 1 brother. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughter, Barbara-Jean Giordano Mastriani and his son-in-law, Ronald Mastriani, his grandchildren, Tina Slingerland (George), Andrea Cavaretta (Jeremy), Melissa Barna (Peter), Michael Mastriani (Christina), Christopher Mastriani and his sister, Nancy Mancini as well as great grandchildren, Giada, Anthony and Natalia Barna; Carter and Kendall Slingerland; Arianna and Gabriella Cavaretta and Samuel and Benjamin Mastriani and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be on Thursday, March 30th from 5-7pm at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave. in Rotterdam. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 9:30am at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 210 Princetown Rd., Rotterdam. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Schenectady. The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the nurses and staff on Ellis C-6 and Ellis Rehabilitation Mohawk Wing for the care they provided with such compassion and dignity. Also, special thanks to all of his therapists for their patience and diligence. Thank you to Dr. William Busino, Dr. William Vacca and Dr. Shailesh Patel for the care they provided over the years. Finally, thank you to Pat Filkins and Fr. Vincent Ciotoli of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church for the kindness shown through their weekly and monthly home visits.
