Rotterdam – Johnnie Gillespie Angus, 86, passed quietly at Albany Medical Center on Thursday, May 6th, 2021 after a short illness. Born in Schenectady on October 1st, 1934, Johnnie was the son of the late John Angus and Bessie (MacKinnon) Angus. Johnnie was a lifelong area resident and graduated in 1953 from Draper High School. He went on to attend Hudson Valley Community College and Empire State College, receiving his Bachelors Degree in Communications. Johnnie worked in the labs at Schenectady Chemical Co. before enlisting in the Army in 1955. He honorably served his country in the Special Forces and at the Pentagon, also working as a microwave radio station chief. In 1961, Johnnie married his lifelong love, Nancy Birt. Together they shared 60 joyful years of marriage. Johnnie worked for 35 years at the University at Albany in Educational Communications. While there he participated in the evolution of television and communications and served as instructor of video production. Johnnie was a very loving, kind, generous and talented person. He enjoyed playing golf, making stained glass pieces, gardening, home projects, camping, traveling the world and dancing with Nancy, and spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the Benedicts Dance Club, proud member and past president of the St. Andrew’s Society of Schenectady, member of the Schenectady Rose Society and volunteer in the gardens at Central Park, past president of Mohonasen Music Parents, and a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in the Stockade where he was instrumental in establishing a production system for broadcasting services to the community. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Birt Angus; sons, Gregory Angus (Natalie), Todd Angus (Betsy) and Kevin Angus (Beth); grandchildren, Jack, Mackenzie, Kate, Grace, Maggie and Zachary (Rachael); sister, Christine Angus Urys as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Besides his parents, Johnnie was predeceased by his siblings, William Angus and Elizabeth Angus Fisher. A celebration of his life will be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 30 N. Ferry Street, Schenectady on Saturday, May 15th at 11:00 am. A private burial will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY. Donations in Johnnie’s name may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children or a charity of your choice.
