John Harold Veivia, 89, passed away suddenly on January 13, 2015 at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in the Township of Mooers, New York on March 29, 1925 and was the son of the late Joseph and Maude (Mayville) Veivia. John grew up on a farm and attended school in Ellenburg, New York.He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed at the Army Depot in Schenectady, New York, where he met the love of his life, Dorothy.After leaving the military, he worked at Sealtest as a Milk Tester, managed a farm in Galway, NY and worked at SI Group (formerly Schenectady Chemical) for 36 years as a Maintenance Mechanic, retiring in 1990.John was a hard worker and an excellent provider. He was a long time member of the Lynnwood Reformed Church in Guilderland. John's greatest source of pride was his family. His favorite activities were camping and canoeing on Lewey Lake and at many other locations throughout the Adirondacks. He was a talented handyman; there wasn't anything he couldn't fix or build.John was a boy scout leader for many years and a great outdoorsman.He was also an avid hockey fan, loved car racing, politics, history, and vegetable gardening.He will be remembered for his tremendous sense of humor, storytelling, and good looks. Predeceased, five months ago, by his beloved wife of 67 years, Dorothy.Also predeceased by six of his eight siblings; Helen Godin, Frank Veivia, Florence Smith, Lawrence Veivia, Edna LaPage, and Raymond Veivia. Survived by his loving children, Bruce Veivia, Michele (Buddy) Nevins, Kathleen (Gary) Endres, Christina (Bill) Lyons, John Veivia (Wendy Brown).Beloved Papa to six grandchildren, Jamison (Stefanie) Nevins; Brandon (Kate) Nevins, Dana (Julie) Nevins, Jennifer Lyons (Dylan Hayden), Stephen Lyons, and Brian Veivia (Tiffany Wohlers), and four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Alex, Blake and Addy Nevins.He is also survived by his two sisters, Mabel Fuller and Theresa Daly; two sisters-in law, Shirley Magilton and Marjorie Bryce, and many nieces and nephews.
