Princetown – At rest, John Peter Van Oort, on April 16, 2023 at the age of 87.
He was born in the family home to his parents Hendrikius Johannes (Henry) of Geldermalsen The Netherlands and his wife Frieda Augusta Gers Van Oort on April 29, 1935. John attended the former Mariaville School along with his elder brother Richard. He furthered his education at the former Draper High School graduating with the class of 1953. After graduation john enlisted in the U.S. Army and commanded a radar section based at Fort Dix.
Following his time in the service he was employed by AT&T, NYNEX and Verizon retiring with 42 years of service. During his retirement he opened the family farm raising beef cattle for 25 years.
He married the love of his life, Sandra M. Brannigan on May 7, 1957. They were wed for 65 years. Sandra passed away in January of this year. They raised three sons on the farm. They are Daniel, James and David.
In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends Dave and Bob Waddell, as well as, Dick Plue.
John, at his passing, was the last charter member of the Plotterkill Volunteer Company. He rose to the Post of Assistant Chief. Ceremonies in honor of his status as the last man will be held at the convenience of the Fire Company. He has answered his last alarm and the mission is complete.
He was also a founding elder of Christ Church of the Hills. He also served as clerk of session.
John was predeceased by his bride and both of his younger sons; his brother Richard; Sister-in-law Corrine Van Oort and his nephew Michael Branningan.
He is survived by his son Daniel Van Oort; Brother and Sister-in-law William and Alice Branningan; Sister-in-law Phyllis Branningan; Nieces Catherine Branningan Berenstein, Dawn Van Oort Holley, Deborah Van Oort McGarry, Douglas Van Oort and Steve Brannigan. Also his step brother and step sister in law Sean Brannigan and Melanie Stockman
Calling hours, with full Fire Department Honors, will be held on Sunday April 30th from 2-4 p.m at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam.
Funeral services will begin 10 a.m. on Monday at Christ Church of the Hills, 4809 Mariaville Rd.
Burial service will follow at Woestina Cemetery where john and Sandra will be buried jointly.
