John Henry Rufer, 84, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

John was born on May 20, 1942, in Canton, Ohio, to John Joseph and Violet Rufer. His family later moved to Schenectady, New York, where he was raised and attended school. He graduated from Linton High School in 1961.

After working various jobs, John began a career with the Town of Rotterdam Highway Department as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic. He took great pride in his work and was highly respected by his coworkers. He also served as a dedicated union representative and shop steward, always willing to advocate for and support others.

John enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting in his free time. He was a proud member of the White Eagle Bar and the Athole Club, where he built many lasting friendships. He also loved Disney and cherished the many trips he took to Disney World with his family, creating memories that will be treasured forever.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Gail Rufer; his sons, John Rufer (Sherri) and Sean Rufer (Carrie); and his daughter, Melanie Schleicher (Eric). He was a proud and loving grandfather to six wonderful grandchildren: John, Megan, Zach, Aydan, Timothy, and Tarynn. He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, David, Harper, Addison, and Mackenzie, and eagerly anticipated the arrival of another great-grandchild in July. He is also survived by his dear brother, Paul Shambo.

Above all else, John was a devoted family man. He had a heart full of love for his family and was always there to offer support, encouragement, and kindness. His dedication to those he loved was evident throughout his life, and the memories he created with his family will be cherished forever.

John’s love, strength, and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he touched throughout the years.
