John A. Nuzback, 67, of Rotterdam, died peacefully on Saturday, July, 22, 2017 at Albany Medical CenterHospital. John was born and raised in Schenectady. After graduating from Mont Pleasant High School in 1968, John served honorably in the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1971. Following his discharge, John was employed at Ellis Hospital and later with Schenectady and Mohawk Ambulance. He then worked as a Fireman with KAPL, and retired as Chief in 2005 after 25 years of service. Following his retirement from KAPL, John served as the Schenectady County Fire Coordinator and retired from that position in 2015 taking on the role of Chief Deputy of the Schenectady County Fire Investigation Team. He was an NYS EMT instructor for 26 years and instructed hundreds of people over the years in basic and recertification courses. In his spare time, John also was a DJ at weddings and other events. John was a past chief and life member of the Carman Fire Department, serving with the department for 30 years, and was currently serving as Commissioner. He was a member and Chief Investigator with the Schenectady County Fire Investigation Team, and member of the Capital District Fire Investigators Association, the International Association of Fire Investigators, NYS Association of Fire Investigators, NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, Rotterdam EMS and the Rotterdam Elks. John was a loving husband, father, papa, brother, brother in law, uncle, godfather and friend. He was a mentor and teacher to over 1,000 people and played an essential role in combining White Eagle and Rotterdam Ambulance into Rotterdam EMS. He also played a key role in keeping Rotterdam EMS in the town of Rotterdam. He took pride in getting his state and national certification as a Fire Investigator. But most of all, John loved spending time with his family and friends. John was predeceased by his parents; John S. Nuzback and Mary Farrell Nuzback, his brother Thomas P. Nuzback, and his father in law and mother in law Gerald and Alice Stone. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda Stone Nuzback, three children; Kristen (Brian) Shoemaker, Amy Nuzback and John (Lynn) Nuzback, brother; Joseph Nuzback, sisters; Maureen (Don) Bekkering and Anne-Pat Nuzback, brother in laws; Bill (Cheryl) Stone and Bob (Ellen) Stone. He was a devoted “Papa” to four grandchildren; John Jr. “JJ” and Reagan Nuzback and Brady and Kyle Shoemaker. John is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-8 pm at Mohonasen High School, 2072 Curry Rd. Rotterdam. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, 10 am at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 3040, Hamburg St. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to any of the following: Schenectady Fire Fighters Cancer Foundation, Carman Fire Department, Rotterdam EMS, Families of SMA, and the Tyler DeMarco Foundation.
