John J. Mazzone

June 21, 1948 — April 3, 2025

The family of John J. Mazzone announces with deep sadness his passing on Thursday, April 3, 2025. He was born in Schenectady on June 21st, 1948 to the late Joseph and Mary Mazzone. He graduated from Bishop Gibbons High School in 1966 and continued his education at St. John’s University, where he earned a B.S. in Business Management and managed and trained with the division 1 Red Storm basketball team under Lou Carnesecca. After graduating, he enlisted and was employed at the Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia where he met his wife, Barbara, whom he married in 1981.

John worked alongside his father at J.J. Mazzone Accounting and took over the business after his passing. John developed deep relationships with his clients and loved to talk about his family.

He was a devout Catholic and a beloved community member of the Mount Carmel congregation, the Elks Club, and the Old-Timers Baseball Club. He had a love of sports; he refereed basketball, soccer, and volleyball, and umpired baseball. He especially adored horse-racing and the New York Yankees, and continued to follow the St. John’s Red Storm basketball team throughout his life.

Muzz, as he was lovingly called, was a very happy, funny, smart, and kind man. He could make anyone smile and always had something interesting to contribute to a conversation or a tale to share about his childhood with intrepid listeners. Everywhere he went, he ran into people he knew; if he didn’t know anyone, he’d know someone by the time he left. There were no strangers, just friends he hadn’t met yet. John went out of his way to help others. He was adored by all who met him.

He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his son Jeff (Rhona) Jordan, his daughters Karen (Bill) Smith, Courtney (Roberto Fragoso Brindis) Mazzone, and Alyson (Chris Abraham) Mazzone; his grandchildren Stephanie (Earl), Jess, William, Julia, Gael, and Riley; his great-grandchildren Emrys and Orym and his siblings, Joseph (Maureen) Mazzone Jr., Maria Mazzone, James (Joanna) Mazzone, and Carmel (Pasquale) Mastroianni. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He will be missed tremendously.
