John B. Manning, 88, passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York, at 1:00 a.m. on February 3, 2026. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he was born on April 21, 1937, at Brady Hospital in Albany, New York, to Alicia (Clarke) and John “Jack” Manning.
John grew up in Albany alongside his three siblings — older sisters Nancy (MacFarland)and Joan (Lowney), and younger brother Barry. He graduated from Albany High School in 1955 and soon after answered the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, completing recruit training at Parris Island before attending amphibious landing school. He served proudly aboard the USS Boston in the North Atlantic until receiving his honorable discharge.
In 1959, John married the love of his life, Josephine (Shaw), beginning a partnership that would span more than six decades. Two days after returning home from military service, he began what would become a distinguished 40 year career with Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation. Starting in the mailroom, he rose steadily through the organization, ultimately retiring as a Director in the Information Technology Department — a testament to his work ethic, intelligence, and determination.
In 1964, John and Josephine moved their young family to Rotterdam, New York, where they raised their three children: Timothy, Dennis, and Kathleen (Katie). Rotterdam remained his home for the rest of his life.
John believed deeply in service — to his community, his church, and his fellow Marines. He served 12 years on the Mohonasen Central School District Board of Education, was an active member of the Electric City Detachment of the Marine Corps League, and completed one term as Chair of the Metroplex in the City of Schenectady. His commitment to civic life extended even further: he served as Board President of the Schenectady Chamber of Commerce, Board President of the Schenectady Museum, was a YMCA Board Member, and participated in a long standing local golf league. His dedication to community institutions reflected his belief in strengthening the place he called home.
John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Josephine; his children Timothy, Dennis, and Kathleen (Katie); his six grandchildren; his three great grandchildren; and his sister Nancy (MacFarland). He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings Joan (Lowney) and Barry.
