On Monday, January 18, 2016, John J. Mageean, Jr. 88, son of John J. Mageean and Anna Mageean Christensen, while surrounded by loved ones, died of a short illness. A private service was held on Friday, January 22, 2016 at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home. Burial was immediately following at the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery at the family plot. Contributions would be appreciated to the Alzheimer's Association. Formerly of Rotterdam, NY and later Ft. Myers Beach, Fla. where he enjoyed retirement and his love of golf.He proudly displayed an award received for a hole in one obtained during a competition. A graduate of Mont Pleasant High School in 1945, after which John started out his career humbly as a Teller for Schenectady Trust Company from 1946 to 1950. He was a milk man and proprietor of Lakeview Dairy from 1950 to 1956 and later resumed his career with Mohawk National Bank and Norstar Bank. This led to a career of 34 years in the financial industry in various officer and management positions. He later was active throughout, and dedicated to the Rotterdam Lyons Club where he was president and later appointed Deputy District Governor. Other involvements included the Rotterdam Elks Club and was President and Chairman of the Rotterdam Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. Earlier he served on the Advisory Board of Directors of the Rotterdam-Schenectady Boys and Girls Club. He was also a member of the Mohawk Club and Lions Hearing Conservation Society.He served on the board of the United Way of Schenectady County and on the Board of the Schenectady County Chamber of Commerce. He was active in Florida in the home owners associations where he served as treasurer for several years. John is survived by his wife of 46 years, renewing their vows and commitment in 1998, Josephine F. Mageean, his one true love. Daughters; Janice LaVare of Florida and Jo Ann Collins Laviano of Clifton Park, son; Patrick O'Brien of Schenectady, grandsons; Keith F. Collins, Thomas O'Brien, John H. Thivierge, Joshua and Nicholas LaVare and several great grandchildren.His sisters;Doris Brown and Peggy Naverette, and brother; Viggo Christensen.He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. John Mageean will be remembered for his devotion and care of his wife, his children and family, and his love of life. May we find peace until we are all reunited again.
