Rotterdam - John J. Karbowski passed away on January 2, 2024 at Ellis Hospital after a short illness. John was born in Schenectady, New York to Genevieve and John R. Karbowski on July 31, 1941 and was 82 at the time of his death.
John was a life-long resident of Schenectady. He attended Mont Pleasant High School and graduated in 1959. While in high school he developed a passion for music, honed his skills on the saxophone and started playing gigs with various commercial bands (including Kings 5 and The 4 Sounds).
He completed beauty school in 1962 and began working as a hairdresser, opening his own salon (The Smart Set) on Union Street. Years later he switched careers, helping to run WAITT (We're All In This Together) Houses Inc.
John married Patricia Paparella in 1963 and together they raised their three children Tari, Tony and Jeff.
John had a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed riding motorcycles in the nice weather and snowmobiles in the winter months. He loved the time he spent in the Adirondacks hunting and fishing with friends and family. During retirement he was able to spend many days up North enjoying the peaceful setting of his camp.
John is survived by his sons Tony (Lisa) and Jeff (Annette); brother James (Suzanne) Karbowski; grand children Raegan (Brian), TJ, Azalea and Zinnia; great-grandchildren Isla and Baylor and his former wife, Patricia Paparella. Also survived by his nephew and nieces, Steven Karbowski, Kimberly Breault and Kristen Clifford and several cousins.
John was predeceased by his parents and sadly, his loving daughter, Tari who passed away in 2022.
He will be missed.
