Niskayuna - Joan Thomas, 80, of Knolls Rd., passed away Wednesday August 28, 2013 at Ellis Hospital, with her loving family by her side, after a brief illness. Born in Philadelphia, PA., She was the daughter of Albert and Marguerite Denaker Reed. Joan was raised in Niskayuna and resided in Rotterdam most of her life. She graduated from the former Nott Terrace High School and went on to graduate from the Child's Hospital School of Nursing in Albany as a LPN. Joan worked as a nurse at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady and at various nursing homes in the Capital District. Joan was active in her faith and served as a Eucharistic minister and was a member of the rosary society at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church where she was a communicant. Her gentle and pure spirit will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Her love of life and hopeful demeanor will always be an inspiration to all who knew her. Along with her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband, Walter Thomas (2005) and her daughter, Patricia Thomas (2002). She is survived by her two daughters; Nancy Thomas and Karen (Christian) Timm both of Schenectady. Her grandson and light of her life, Ian Timm. Two brothers; Donald (Kay) Reed of Niskayuna and Kenneth Reed of Schenectady. Her sister; Carol Anderson of Saratoga Springs. Joan is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. Funeral services will begin 8:45 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Princetown Rd., Rotterdam. Burial will follow at St. Cyril's Cemetery.
