Joan Frances (Hickok) Small

Joan Frances (Hickok) Small, age 82, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2026. Born April 16, 1943 in Schenectady NY, Joan was the daughter of the late Stanley G. and Frances Louise (Benoit) Hickok.

Nothing was more important to Joan than her family. While her children were young, Joan was a stay-at-home mom and, with Jack, provided a loving childhood for them. They made lasting memories during summer vacations, birthdays, holidays and volunteering at school events. Joan was a talented seamstress and her handmade Halloween costumes and doll clothes will always be fondly remembered. Joan was a loving grandmother and loved so much by all of her grandchildren. She was their biggest cheerleader at all of their sporting and school activities. She was always on the sidelines or in the stands for all the games, concerts and plays. Joan enjoyed wintering with Jack in Florida and Myrtle Beach for many years in their retirement.

Once her children were school-aged, Joan dedicated many years to Caldor in Schenectady, being one of the longest employed associates. She held many positions throughout the years and made several longtime friends.

Joan is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, John Small; her devoted children, Debbie (Chuck) Hilson and David (Gina) Small; and her cherished grandchildren, Michael and Stephanie Hilson, and Miranda and Justin Small. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and other family members whom she loved very much. Joan was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Ronald and Stanley Hickok; a brother-in-law, Bill Small; and a sister-in-law, Maureen Roy.
