James J. Lagasse of Rotterdam, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at his home with his loving family at his bedside, he was 76. James graduated from Bishop Gibbons in 1964 and later received his associate’s degree from SUNY ESF Ranger School in Wanakena, NY. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was inducted on Thanksgiving day, 1966. He served in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart. James was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal in 1968. He was employed as a Surveyor with C.T. Male for over 40 years. At one time he helped survey a portion of the Appalachian Trail. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Madeleine Sophie Church and the VFW Post #1895 on Draper Ave. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, cutting wood and identifying trees. James was predeceased by his parents, Honore W. Lagasse and Blanch D. Rollier Lagasse. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Plaza Lagasse, two sons, James J. (Denise) Lagasse and Aaron J. Lagasse, his sister, Lynn (Dick) Tyron, three grandchildren, Jacob, Derek and Jenna and his step children, Darrell Herschel and Amanda Plaza, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 25th, from 10 am to 12 noon at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave. A Memorial Service, with military honors, will begin at 12 noon at the funeral home.
