Rotterdam – God sent his angels to bring home to heaven, a wonderful man, Henry A. Fornal on Saturday, February 11th, 2017. Born in Meriden, CT, Henry was the son of the late Andrew and Nellie (Korkocz) Fornal. Henry proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, serving on the USS Saipan during the Asiatic Pacific Theater. After his discharge from the armed forces, Henry traveled as a baseball umpire until settling and umpiring throughout the Capital District. Henry worked as a glazer for Arrow and Spa Glass and Mirror, and later as a security guard for the General Electric Company until his retirement. Henry was a member of the Rotterdam Elks, Melvin Roads American Legion Post 1231, barber and avid golfer. In his spare time, Henry enjoyed tending to his lawn, rose bushes and peonies. He selflessly volunteered many hours with the Elks at the VA Hospital distributing popcorn and ice cream to area veterans. One of his favorite past times was attending Union College hockey gamesalongside his son, Marty. Henry is predeceased by his sister, Genevieve Fazzino. He leaves behind to treasure his memory his devoted and cherished wife of 59 years, Genevieve M. (Grabicki) Fornal, his devoted daughter, Karen Peterson (Roger) of East Greenbush and his devoted son, Marty Fornal (Debby) of Ballston Spa and his grandson, Lucas Fornal. He also leaves behind his brothers, Joseph and Robert Fornal. A visitation will be Thursday, February 16th from 9-10am at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. Funeral services will begin at 10:15am at the funeral home and will be followed by a mass of Christian burial at 11am at St. Adalbert’s Church, Lansing St., Schenectady. Interment with military honors will be in St. Adalbert’s Cemetery in Rotterdam. Henry’s family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Saaket Gupta and Connie, Dr. Peter Cospito and Kathy, Ellis Home Draw’s Mike and Carrie and a special thanks to Pina DeMarco and Amanda and Sonja and the rest of the staff at Gentle Home Health Care for the loving care that they provided to Henry. Memorial contributions in Henry’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
